Wow. Tozer’s words today are a perfect response to the issues we talked about yesterday. The job of the Gospel is to change us. If we are not changing to be more like Him every day, what are we even doing? If He is who He says He is, who am I to pass judgement? Is He holy? Yes? Then how could I even think about judging his ways? By whose standard? Whose mind would I really be able to use to judge Him? If He is who He says He is, I certainly couldn’t use my own mind to decide if what He does is good or bad. I wouldn’t have mine if it weren’t for Him having His. So if I have to be out of my mind to judge Him does that sound like the right job for me? Is that really my place? Obviously not. My proper place is submitted under His mind, His definitions, His will. So when we open His Word, we have to remind ourselves at Whom we are really looking. With reverent awe in fear and trembling we realize we are opening ourselves up to more Truth, more Hope, more Life.
Jesus ended many of His teachings with, “he who has ears let him hear.” In order to hear someone else you first have to stop talking. Quieting oneself is a respectful way to go before the table and eat the bread of the Word of God. Look, I think this may be taking things a little too seriously but when I think of how awesome God says He is, I’m humbled. Is it even possible to take Him too seriously? What does Jesus say about that? I think we are more likely to take things less seriously than they ought to be taken. Maybe this is just my personal proclivities but it’s the easier option to make a joke of everything and humans certainly are creatures of comfort.
When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of Glory died.
Did e’er such Love and Sorrow meet,
Or thorns produce so rich a crown?
